Center for Equine Business Studies to Focus on Cattle in Equine Competition
Value of cattle used in competition and pricing to be determined
(Fort Worth, Texas) -
The Center for Equine Business Studies (CEBS) at Texas A&M University will conduct a study on the use of cattle in equine
competition throughout July and August and is inviting organizations and competition managers to submit information for the study.
According to CEBS Executive Director Ernie Davis, PhD, the study will help determine the value of cattle used in competition and
variances in pricing across the country.
"Texas A&M has done extensive research for the beef industry that can be applied to the results of this study that will help
the equine industry put a value on the cattle it uses in competitions such as cutting, team roping, team penning and reined working
cow horse," he said. "There has never been a comprehensive study done on the number of cattle used in equine competition and what
the horse industry contributes economically to the cattle industry through this 'alternative' income source for beef producers and
corriente breeders. This will also give those groups a good idea of the price differences in cattle across the country."
Worksheets will be provided to those organizations and competitions managers who wish to participate in the study and can provide
information about the cattle contracted over the past three years. Data needed for the study includes the total number of cattle
contracted, average weight and age, as well as total used in each performance. Participants who return worksheets by August 1, 2006,
will receive a copy of the complimentary copy of the full study while a summary of the study will be made available on the
CEBS website at cebs.tamu.edu in the Fall 2006.
