The proposed Center for Equine Business Studies at Texas A&M University will serve the horse community
by collecting and analyzing available data to fully describe the impact of the U.S. horse livestock industry. From this
collection, and with feedback provided by the industry, the Center will begin to identify areas of need. Included in its
mission as deliverables to the industry are:
Conduct research analyses of the industry, both domestically as well as internationally as it relates to the U.S.
impact on the international market, and assess the consequences of alternative policy proposals. Industry-specific
research may include the analysis of economic benefits of health practices, the values of genetic traits, and the economic
feasibility of alternative equine-related enterprises;
- Develop annual reports regarding specific industry areas and general industry information;
- Conduct horse livestock market analyses, growth studies and custom industry studies;
- Stimulate the development of an equine economics curriculum at Texas A&M University to provide a source of knowledge and
valuable employees to the industry. This degree program would prepare students for business or management careers in different
aspects of the industry; and
- Further, the Center will maintain a staff that will conduct outreach activities to include an annual conference dealing with
current issues related to various facets of the equine industry. This annual conference will be used to bring information and
education to industry participants, as well as involve industry representatives in identifying key issues for future research
and outreach programs. The conference curriculum and course content will be updated and revised regularly based on input from
former students and from industry feedback.
Another example of industry outreach would be the development of training programs to be offered online via distance education that will provide training in small business management with special emphases on equine-related enterprises.
